Coverage

TotalProtect offers a choice of three plans – the Appliances Plan, the Systems Plan, and the Combo Plan.

The Appliances Plan covers refrigerators with built-in water and ice dispensers, cooktops/ranges, wall ovens, built-in microwaves, range exhaust hoods, built-in trash compactors, built-in dishwashers, clothes washers, and clothes dryers.

The Systems Plan covers garbage disposals, two air conditioning units and two heating units, water heaters, toilets, plumbing lines and stoppages, sump pumps, whirlpool baths, exhaust fans for the attic and/or whole house, central vacuums, doorbells, smoke detectors, garage door openers, main breakers/fuse panel boxes, interior electrical lines, and interior gas lines.

The Combo Plan covers everything listed under the Appliances and Systems plans.

All three systems come with optional coverage for pool and spa, and the Combo Plan comes with a homeowners insurance deductible reimbursement of $500.

Pricing depends on your area, so TotalProtect offers a tool for getting your free quote on their website.

What sets TotalProtect apart from other home warranty companies is that their plans include unknown pre-existing conditions coverage, as well as rust and corrosion damage coverage. There are no annual aggregate caps and inspections are not required.

Terms and Conditions

TotalProtect does not offer an overview of their home warranty terms and conditions on their website. You will, of course, have an opportunity to read and examine the terms, conditions, and limitations section of the contract before signing. Some of these issues are covered in the FAQ section of their website. That’s where we found out that TotalProtect home warranty does not cover appliances and systems that have been misused and improperly installed, which is standard for the home warranty business. However, what is not standard is the fact that TotalProtect will cover appliances and systems that are still under a manufacturer’s warranty, unlike most other companies that refuse to cover anything that still has a valid warranty.

According to the TotalProtect sample contract which is available online, this home warranty company offers to repair or replace any covered item with a mechanical failure. The sample contract also provides detailed descriptions of all the covered components. However, this sample is exactly that – a sample – and it may be seriously different from the one you could be offered for your household. However, reading this sample contract will give you insight into the services TotalProtect provides and which limitations you could face if you sign up for one of their warranty plans. The sample contract also includes information about cancellation and a list of appliances that can be added to your plan by paying additional fees.

TotalProtect doesn’t cover any damage caused by fungus, mold, natural disasters or improper use and installation. Just like many other home warranty company, TotalProtects doesn’t cover the appliances and systems that are already covered by the manufacturer’s warranty or any other kind of insurance or guarantee. In these cases, TotalProtect defines previously mentioned warranties as primary and the company maintains the right not to cover any repairs or a replacement.

In order to be covered, all the appliances and systems must be in “proper operating condition” on the date the contract is signed. If a malfunction occurs because of pre-existing condition, TotalProtect will cover it only if the pre-existing condition was not detected during a visual inspection or a simple mechanical test.

It goes without saying that you should read the terms and conditions from top to bottom because there could be conditions that could end up leaving you uncovered. For example, TotalProtect initially claims that they cover all damage caused by rust and corrosion. But when you read the examples of items and conditions that aren’t covered, you’ll find out that your central heating system isn’t covered if the water flow restriction was caused by rust. The same goes for kitchen and laundry appliances, as well as your plumbing system.

The rate of your deductible is also important when it comes to the price of warranty plan. A deductible is the price you have to pay the contractor to repair or replace something. The higher the deductible, the lower the monthly rates for your home warranty plan. You can choose between three options for your deductible. You can opt for the $125, $100 or $75 deductalbe.

If you decide to cancel your warranty plan before filing any claims, the whole amount of the paid contract fees will be refunded. You can cancel your plan within 30 days of the effective date of your contract. If you decide to cancel within that time period but have made a claim, or anytime after this period, you can get a partial refund. In this case, there is a $25 cancellation fee.

Customer Service

If your claim is filed during working hours, the company will make an attempt to contact the contractor in the following two hours. Since customer support is available 24/7/365, your claim can be filed any time. However, if you contact support on weekends or during the holiday, they’ll contact the contractor within 24 hours.

Claims can be made 24/7 through a customer service phone line, e-mail, or through a claim form on the website. Once you file the claim and receive a confirmation, a local contractor will most likely resolve your issue within 24 hours.

In addition to the 24/7 online and phone customer service, TotalProtect provides a comprehensive FAQ section.

Contractors

TotalProtect has an impressive network of over 40,000 contractors all over the United States. All of them have been carefully pre-screened in order to make sure they have all the necessary licenses and insurance. In addition, the company has their own Dynamic Vendor Rating system, in which every single contractor is rated and reviewed based on customer feedback, among other criteria. That way the company makes sure they only work with the most professional, trustworthy, and experienced contractors.

Thanks to the impressive number of contractors, chances are your claim will be taken care of in no time, regardless of your location.

I have had contract with Total Protect for at least 10 years. In that time I have submitted many claims, most without any problems. They have replaced my washer/dryer, my dishwasher, garbage disposal, water heater and my furnace! All at.no cost to me except my service call fee . They have also been here for several repairs. Always prompt and professional. Only problem was with my furnace. The contractor they called could not/would not attempt to fix it or replace it. He did advise Total Protect that it needed to be replaced. They had no other contractors in the area so I was advised to call one of my choice. Long story short, I had to pay out of pocket for the replacement of my furnace and wait for reimbursement. It took many phone calls and almost 6 weeks but I finally got my money. It was worth the wait. ($6000). After 10 years I am still very happy with this company.

I can’t find a single advantage here. Total Protect succeeded to fail every single time I needed them to do something. First the air-conditioner broke. I called them, informed them about the problem and they said it would be fixed in 24 hours. I had to wait three days before the contractor appeared and all of that just to tell me that it wasn’t “mechanical”. However, I thought it really wasn’t covered, so I kept quiet. Microwave was next. Whole waiting scenario repeated and they refused to pay without further explanations. I was so pissed off that I didn’t even insist. Then the big toilet clogging came. Want to know what I did? Called a local plumber and fixed everything in an hour. The following day I got rid of Total Protect lying bustards.

I started using TotalPotect home warranty a year ago and it was fine for some time. Nothing broke during the time, to be honest. But this winter my water heater broke. I just wanted to take a shower and got an ice-bucket challenge without planning or wanting it. I called the customer service immediately and they said they were on it. The contractor really showed up in the next 24 hours, but didn’t fix a thing. Said it’s hopeless and he can’t do anything, but people from TotalProtect promised to replace the heater ASAP. I didn’t imagine ASAP as one-month period, gotta be honest. I complained, I shouted, I begged, but nothing helped. Just when I gave up and started looking for a solution myself, some people came to replace the heater. After a month of horrible torture I broke the agreement and said never again!

This happened in April, and I want to underline that. My microwave set itself on fire and naturally stopped working. I called total protect, explained what happened and they said someone would come soon to take a look. A technician came a few days later, but said the damage was too big and he couldn’t fix it. I bought a new one and sent the receipt to total protect claiming a reimbursement. I got a reply that they got it covered. New Years is in a few days and I haven’t seen a penny yet. I called the customer service and they said that someone would get back to me in 30 minutes, but nobody ever called.

Don’t believe anything these guys say, cause they are goddamn scam! The agreement said not to pay attention to pre-existing conditions cause they’re gonna accept anything that works, no matter how old it was. And I believed cause it’s in the agreement. But don’t hold your breath for it! When my AC suddenly broke I called total protect to send someone fix it. First of all technician didn’t show in the next 48 hours and second of all he said something wasn’t installed properly. Total protect said repairing of such appliance wasn’t covered by the agreement. What a big fat lie!

We’ve had a policy with total protect for years now and we’ve been pretty satisfied most of the time. There was a problem once, we had to wait for a week to get our washer machine repaired, but it was done eventually. I hope something like that never happens again.

This is a complete disaster! I waited for hours on hold when tried to reach the customer support. And then the technicians came two weeks later and charged extra.

I’ve been a client of Total Protect since last year and I must say it’s better than all the other home warranty companies I’ve signed with in the past.

I’m very happy with total protect combo plan. I took it a year ago, but I plan on extending it when the time comes. It’s always so simple with them, I had some problems twice and they sent technicians to fix it the following day, both times. Once it was the clothes washer and then the oven. The technicians were very kind and efficient. I had to add some money, but I don’t regret it. They replaced my oven very fast, it took only a couple of days and they didn’t make a mess like the contractors usually do. I was very content.

I travel a lot for business and I can’t always come home when something breaks. So, we decided to sign up for a home warranty plan and a friend recommended Total Protect. We took the combo plan because my wife knows nothing about home repairs of any kind and this is the safest option. The guys came three times to the house in the past two years and evey time everything was fixed in a week or less.
