Coverage
As for the plans, Select Home Warranty offers Platinum Care, Gold Care, and Bronze Care. Bronze is, logically, the cheapest and the least extensive and only includes household appliances. This plan covers your clothes washer and dryer, garbage disposal, refrigerator, stove/ oven, built-in microwave, cooktop, and dishwasher.
Gold Care covers selected household systems, namely your heating system, water heater, plumbing, ductwork, air conditioning, and electrical system.
The Platinum Care plan combines the two previous plans and covers all the appliances and systems mentioned above.
Select Home Warranty also offers additional coverage for systems and appliances that are not considered basic or standard, such as your pool, central vacuum, second fridge, sump pump, well pump, stand-alone freezer, refrigerator ice maker, lawn sprinklers, septic system, roof leak, lighting and plumbing fixtures, additional heaters, furnaces and AC units, as well as spa.
As you can see above, the list of home systems and appliances covered in these three plans is fairly basic, or should we say standard, as it does include almost all the systems and appliances covered by other home warranty companies with similar plans. Those systems and appliances that do not fall into these three plans but are included in additional coverage are also pretty standard for this line of business. What this basically mean is that there are no surprises here, no special items or extra features in terms of coverage, but all the appliances commonly found in most households are definitely covered.
In addition to the free quote, Select Home Warranty frequently offers discount coupons, up to two extra months for free and complimentary coverage of home appliances and systems not included in the plans, such as, for example, your roof. The company offers convenient monthly payment of your plan at affordable prices, fit for every budget.
Terms and Conditions
When a system or appliance failure happens, you have to contact customer service of Select Home Warranty prior to calling a technician on your own or trying to fix the problem by yourself if you want Select to accept your claim. If you fail to contact Select and hire a technician separately from your home warranty plan, the company will render your claim invalid.
Select Home Warranty also suggests you check your contract before filing a claim, because it might be the case that the broken appliance isn’t covered by the home warranty. Anyhow, it’s certainly recommended to carefully read terms and conditions before signing the contract because some systems and appliances can be listed as covered but not their parts. So, for example, your plumbing system could be covered, but your tub and shower base pans isn’t. Moreover, the agreement doesn’t cover line leaks or stoppages caused by freezing, root damage, broken drain or sewer lines outside the main foundation of your home. Select home warranty also doesn’t cover malfunctions that are the result of inadequate water pressure or plumbing components relating to hose bibs.
Every time Select Home Warranty sends a technician to your home you need to pay Select Service Call Fee in the amount of $60. In case you miss the appointment or cancel it while the technician is on the way to your house, you are obliged to pay the Select Service Call Fee. If you don’t pay this fee, you won’t be able to schedule another service appointment and your contract will be suspended until Select receives the payment.
If you decide to cancel the agreement, you’ll have to pay $75 cancellation fee and may be entitled a pro-rated refund. But if you cancel the agreement before the expiration of 30-day period without submitting any claims, you’ll get a full refund.
One thing that we have not seen in the terms and conditions of other home warranty companies is a line that says that the contract covers one refrigerator located in the kitchen. If you have a fridge located in other rooms or units of the house, it will not be covered.
