Coverage

Like most home warranty companies, Select Home Warranty offers a free quote for those who are interested in getting this sort of service contract but have no idea how much that could cost.

As for the plans, Select Home Warranty offers Platinum Care, Gold Care, and Bronze Care. Bronze is, logically, the cheapest and the least extensive and only includes household appliances. This plan covers your clothes washer and dryer, garbage disposal, refrigerator, stove/ oven, built-in microwave, cooktop, and dishwasher.

Gold Care covers selected household systems, namely your heating system, water heater, plumbing, ductwork, air conditioning, and electrical system.

The Platinum Care plan combines the two previous plans and covers all the appliances and systems mentioned above.

Select Home Warranty also offers additional coverage for systems and appliances that are not considered basic or standard, such as your pool, central vacuum, second fridge, sump pump, well pump, stand-alone freezer, refrigerator ice maker, lawn sprinklers, septic system, roof leak, lighting and plumbing fixtures, additional heaters, furnaces and AC units, as well as spa.

As you can see above, the list of home systems and appliances covered in these three plans is fairly basic, or should we say standard, as it does include almost all the systems and appliances covered by other home warranty companies with similar plans. Those systems and appliances that do not fall into these three plans but are included in additional coverage are also pretty standard for this line of business. What this basically mean is that there are no surprises here, no special items or extra features in terms of coverage, but all the appliances commonly found in most households are definitely covered.

In addition to the free quote, Select Home Warranty frequently offers discount coupons, up to two extra months for free and complimentary coverage of home appliances and systems not included in the plans, such as, for example, your roof. The company offers convenient monthly payment of your plan at affordable prices, fit for every budget.

Terms and Conditions

The Terms and Conditions page is rather clearly marked on the Select Home Warranty website and we have to say it’s very straightforward and easy to understand. The actual terms and conditions are pretty standard – for instance, like most other home warranty companies, Select will not cover appliances and systems that are not in proper working order on the effective date of the contract, or that have pre-existing defects and malfunctions. Systems and appliances covered by an existing manufacturer’s or distributor’s warranty will also be excluded.

When a system or appliance failure happens, you have to contact customer service of Select Home Warranty prior to calling a technician on your own or trying to fix the problem by yourself if you want Select to accept your claim. If you fail to contact Select and hire a technician separately from your home warranty plan, the company will render your claim invalid.

Select Home Warranty also suggests you check your contract before filing a claim, because it might be the case that the broken appliance isn’t covered by the home warranty. Anyhow, it’s certainly recommended to carefully read terms and conditions before signing the contract because some systems and appliances can be listed as covered but not their parts. So, for example, your plumbing system could be covered, but your tub and shower base pans isn’t. Moreover, the agreement doesn’t cover line leaks or stoppages caused by freezing, root damage, broken drain or sewer lines outside the main foundation of your home. Select home warranty also doesn’t cover malfunctions that are the result of inadequate water pressure or plumbing components relating to hose bibs.

Every time Select Home Warranty sends a technician to your home you need to pay Select Service Call Fee in the amount of $60. In case you miss the appointment or cancel it while the technician is on the way to your house, you are obliged to pay the Select Service Call Fee. If you don’t pay this fee, you won’t be able to schedule another service appointment and your contract will be suspended until Select receives the payment.

If you decide to cancel the agreement, you’ll have to pay $75 cancellation fee and may be entitled a pro-rated refund. But if you cancel the agreement before the expiration of 30-day period without submitting any claims, you’ll get a full refund.

One thing that we have not seen in the terms and conditions of other home warranty companies is a line that says that the contract covers one refrigerator located in the kitchen. If you have a fridge located in other rooms or units of the house, it will not be covered.

Customer Service

Besides the wide range of covered home appliances and systems, a good, reliable customer support is essential for a first-class warranty company. Since you can’t predict the date or time when something might go wrong with your appliances, you need a home warranty that’s always available for you. Select Home Warranty offers 24/7 phone support service. You can make your toll-free call anytime day or night, no matter if it’s a working day, weekend or holiday. If you’re not a big fan of phone calls, you can also write an email or file your claim online by filling the form. Select will contact the nearest contractor in the following two days if your claim is filed during the working hours. However, if you file a claim on the weekend or holiday, the company will find a contractor for you in the next four days. After a technician is informed about your problem, you’ll receive an email with his or her contact so you can make an appointment in accordance with the time you’re available.

Select also has a FAQ section that can be useful to those who need some more information about home warranties in general, the company and the services it provides.

Contractors

Select Home Warranty works with a large network of qualified, experienced, and professional contractors. When something in your home breaks down, you contact the company and if the system or appliance that broke down is covered by your contract, the company sends the nearest contractor to resolve the issue.

I have only one recommendation when it comes to select home warranty – stay away from them, guys, far away! Not worth your money, your time, and definitely not worth your patience.

I know absolutely nothing about home repairs, even changing the light bulb is a challenge, so I signed for home warranty with Select. Well, it turns out they know about home appliances as much as I do. I had so many troubles, I can’t even remember everything. Like, the girl from the customer service didn’t understand that my fridge broke, so two days later a contractor was at my door asking about my garage door opener. I don’t even have a garage, for that matter. For the God sakes, she didn’t even listen!

My family has been very content with Select home warranty for years, but then one claim made everything turn upside down and I am seriously considering breaking the contract and finding another company. My AC stopped working and I informed Select. They sent a technician, but he wasn’t able to fix. We replaced it and submitted the receipt. However, more than a month passed and Select still refuse to make a reimbursement.

My wife and I didn’t really like the whole idea of home warranty, it seemed a bit fishy. But her brother convinced us in the end and it turned out we were right, at least about Select Home Warranty. I know my way around plumbing and the pool, but kitchen appliances really give me a headache, so we chose the Bronze Care. After three months the fridge broke down, and we filed a claim. Customer support informed us that they found a technician and that we should contact him. But the technician wasn’t responding for two whole days (while our food was rotting in the non-functioning fridge) and I called Select. They said that they were sorry and they would send me an email with another contractor’s contact. A whole day passed – nothing. I called again, they said it was sent, but they would send it again. A week passed – no emails, no calls, I can’t reach them and can’t wait to go there and cancel everything!

I’ve used home warranty services in the past, but a year ago I heard of Select Home Warranty and as my agreement with another company was expiring I decided to give it a try. I took Platinum Care because like to have everything covered. Well, it home warranties it’s never everything precisely, but with Select is as far as it can get. I had to contact them three times and they never denied the repair under the excuse of the part of an appliance not being covered by the contract. The technicians repaired the appliances twice, but I had to replace the dishwasher. They didn’t refund the whole amount, but I guess that’s according to the contract. I also didn’t like that I had to wait for a month to get that refund, but at least I got it eventually. With some other companies I couldn’t even get a technician to come over and check.

I’ve been with Select Home Warranty for a couple of years now and I’m quite content with them. I would lie if I said that those little tricks about what part of my AC is covered and what isn’t doesn’t get on my nerves, but that’s the deal with all home warranty companies and you can’t escape that. Despite that, I don’t have any complaints. I had a plumbing issue recently and I informed customer support about that. A very competent technician came the following day, told me not to worry and solved the problem in an hour. And that’s enough for me.

Last month my garage door broke and I called select. The lady from the customer support was very nice and she said it’d be fixed. I got the contractor’s number, called and told him to come asap. He came the next day, but he had to order some part for the door. The part came after a few days and the door was fixed the same day. The technician was a great guy, really knows his job.

My cooktop was dead out of the blue and I was preparing a big dinner later that week. Luckily, Select sent a technician in less than 24 hours and everything was working properly after a short repair. My cook was saved, the dinner was saved and all that thanks to Select.

The only thing I can recommend about Select home warranty is to stay away from them. I had the worst experience ever when my heating went down. Gosh, it was the middle of February and it was a real emergency. Select said they gonna send someone. Guess what, never happened!
