Coverage

Choice Home Warranty offers two plans to choose from. The plans, called Basic and Total, are explained in a very clear and helpful chart, listing which exact systems and appliances are covered in each plan.

The Basic plan should probably be called something other than “Basic” since it really covers a lot. If you sign up for this plan, you will get coverage on heating, electrical and plumbing systems, plumbing stoppage, water heater, whirlpool bathtub, oven or stove, dishwasher, cooktop, garbage disposal, built-in microwave, garage door opener, ductwork, and ceiling and exhaust fans. The plan called Total covers all that, plus air conditioning, fridge, clothes washer, and clothes dryer. These additional appliances and system make all the difference between two plans, which is one of the reasons people more frequently opt for the Basic plan instead of the Total.

You can also opt for additional coverage for your pool/spa, well pump, sump pump, central vacuum, septic system, septic tank pumping, second fridge, and stand-alone freezer.

Terms and Conditions

Choice Home Warranty is pretty straightforward about their business and terms and conditions on the User Agreement page of their website. These kinds of things are usually quite complicated for anyone not versed in “legal-speak,” but in the case of Choice Home Warranty, you’ll find that everything is clear and understandable and there are no hidden traps and insidious fine print. Just make sure to read everything before you sign up.

Some might find these terms and conditions to be a bit restrictive, but they are actually pretty standard for this line of business.

Your home warranty plan will start 30 days after you sign the contract and get a confirmation and a receipt. Choice Home Warranty offers one-year plans, which means your systems and appliances will be covered for 365 days. As it is the case with most home warranty companies, when/if some of the appliances or systems that are covered by your contract malfunction or break down, you contact the company’s Claims Department, which sends a team of technicians to take care of the problem.

Bear in mind that the call to the Claims Department is not free. In fact, there is a $60 trade service call fee, and that means $60 per claim, regardless of the actual cost of the repair or replacement. This fee cannot be paid in advance and is payable directly to the technicians sent by the company.

Another thing you should keep in mind is that any type of appliance or home system that can be qualified as “commercial-grade” will be excluded from the coverage, even though that specific type of appliance or system is listed in the plan details. For example, if you own a commercial-grade refrigerator and it breaks down, it will not be covered by your home warranty, even though your plan covers refrigerators.

You should also bear in mind that even for appliances that are well within coverage, there are some exceptions that might make your claim invalid. For example, not all the parts in an appliance are included in the coverage. If your washing machine breaks down and the cause is, say, a problem with some of the knobs and dials, or filter screens, your claim will be denied because those specific parts are not included in the coverage. In order to ascertain exactly which parts are or are not included in the coverage, it is highly recommended you read terms and conditions, as well as the user agreement, very carefully. Another common reason for denied warranty claims is a pre-existing condition, meaning, if the technician sent by the company finds that the problem is something that the appliance was already suffering from before it was covered with warranty, the claim will be invalid.

Choice Home Warranty does not care about how old your appliances or systems are, as long as they are well maintained, properly used and without any pre-existing conditions.

Choice Home Warranty guarantees the repair or replacement of your system or appliance, provided it is covered and eligible for a claim. If your appliance cannot be repaired, the company will replace it. If a replacement is not available at the moment, the company will offer you cash payment in the amount of its replacement cost.

Customer Service

Choice Home Warranty offers support and service via their website, where you, if you are already a customer, can sign in into the account center. From there, you can easily make a claim and the company will reach out to you and try to send a technician as soon as possible. There is also a phone number you can use if you require more immediate assistance, as well as email. Some of the most common questions are answered in a plain, simple and straightforward way on the website as well, right next to the user agreement, where you will find all the details regarding what is or is not included in your coverage and how to make a claim. You can also use the website to get a free claim and see exactly how much you would have to pay should you decide to get a home warranty through this company.

Their customer service is available around the clock, meaning 24/7, all year round. This is very important since, obviously, your systems and appliances don’t really care what time of the day or day of the year it is, and they often break down in the middle of the night.

Contractors

Choice Home Warranty boasts a large base of service contractors, all of which have to meet the company’s high standards when it comes to professionalism, expertise and, of course, customer service skills.

The company uses strict screening methods in selecting their contractors, so you can rest assured they won’t send you just about anyone, let alone a hack. All the technicians working with this company are experienced, licensed and insured. Since Choice Home Warranty provides nation-wide services, they also aim to build a network of contractors all across the country, so that you can easily be matched with the technician that is the closest to your location, thus minimizing your waiting time. The network of contractors really is quite large, however, certain regions are better covered than the other, less populous ones.

I submitted on online inquiry, and my phone immediately rang. Advised that the seller is to be purchasing the plan. I was transferred to another department, as Tracy couldn’t help me. The guy that answered had no idea why I was transferred, and was ZERO help. Then hung up on me. Made it painfully obvious that we won’t be choosing this vendor!

I’m definitely not saying this is a scam, but I’m not sure if it makes sense financially. First, we made like five claims and four of them were denied. We did read the small print, but they still said no, allegedly our stuff (dishwasher, fridge…) was broken to begin with. Second, the guy they sent us did not leave a good impression. He was impolite and in a rush.

I have a feeling that Choice just has one goal in mind – deny deny deny. I do not know a single person who successfully made a claim and got a replacement or even a repair. I know that they denied the heck out of my claims (I made a few).

I know that some people had their complaints about Choice Home Warranty but I have to say I had a positive experience with them. My claim was about the garbage disposal. I live alone and have no idea how to fix anything when it breaks so for me it is very important to be able to rely on someone to take care of the things for me. Back to the disposal – when it simply stopped working (after making horrific sounds for awhile) I called Choice and they said someone would call me back. A technician phoned in the next day and asked if it that afternoon worked for me. We fixed an appointment and he was there on time. He stayed for some 45 minutes. Fortunately, it wasn’t a serious problem so he was able to fix it there and then and I only paid the service fee.

As far as home warranties go, this one is fairly good. They don’t lie about anything, at least. They will probably deny many of your claims but they will be honest about why they are doing it and it’s all in the contract you signed so there you go.

The technician they sent over was horrible. He was 45min late, reeking of BO and didn’t fix our dishwasher, saying it should be replaced. That’s not what we signed up for.

Choice Home Warranty is the second home warranty we tried. We didn’t renew the contract with our previous one because they were too slow and their technicians were not very professional. Some pals recommended this one and so far we are more or less satisfied. We called about our garage door opener which started going crazy on us. The repairman said it was a sensor problem, replaced it and charged the $60 fee. However, after a few days, the door broke again. Again, the same technician, the same sensor problem and the same $60 fee. The third time it happened we just decided to replace it ourselves. Which pretty much defies the purpose of having a home warranty contract.

I purchased the Total plan plus additional coverage for my pool. It wasn’t cheap, I’ll tell you that, but I felt (and I still do) what you buy is peace of mind. Anyways, I had one minor plumbing issue. The drain in the bathtub was clogged or something. When the technician inspected the piping, he pulled out a huge chunk of something resembling the abrasive side of a dish sponge. I have no idea how that got there. He said it was our fault it was there, you’re not supposed to allow objects like that into the pipes. I was afraid he’d say our claim was no good, but he didn’t. He fixed it, took the service fee money and left.

I have had the perfect user experience with this company. I know it sounds weird because these days you can’t trust anyone really, and I only called once for a warranty claim, so I’m basing my opinion on that. The light in our fridge broke and it wasn’t just the bulb, it was some electric problem in the system. So we called and they sent a technician the following day, first thing in the morning. He was on time, polite, friendly and very professional, fixed the problem in 15 minutes, politely reminded us of the service fee and left.

Call me picky but I just don’t like the customer service at Choice Home Warranty. Whenever I phoned in a claim, they treated me like I was trying to trick them. We had two different technicians sent over on two different occasions, one of them was okay but the second one was a disaster, a young kid with barely any experience, very confused and even a bit rude. Our claims were approved on both occasions, though, so I guess that’s a plus side, since I know a lot of people who just keep getting denied on the grounds of “pre-existing conditions”

When my dryer stopped actually drying clothes, I called in my claim and let me tell you, they kept me on hold for over 45 minutes! When someone finally answered, they said they had no technicians available in my area at the moment so I should call back the next day. The next day, the same thing happened. It took them five days to find a technician to send over!!
