User reviews of Illinois home warranty companies

  • Submitted By Shawn Brown, Aurora, American Home Shield

What can I say about American Home Shield…Sure, they are a major company that does not joke around and they definitely have a large customer base, which is always a good sign. But I’m not sure I would recommend anyone getting a contract from this company. Or any other home warranty, actually. Those things just don’t add up. They say you are covered for some appliances, but then not the entire appliance is covered. If something breaks that’s not covered, you still pay the fee AND you have to get a new technician and pay for his services as well. You have to read the fine print very carefully before you make the call and have someone over, but that’s not even the worst part, it’s that you waste money on plan and everything and get pretty much nothing in return. But again, that’s the problem with all home warranties.

  • Submitted By Leslie Kurtz, Springfield, SquareTrade

Very good company that has a unique twist on home warranty services. I have their coverage on several appliances, on my phone and PC, and I simply feel safer.

  • Submitted By Luca Signorelli, Joliet, Select Home Warranty

Select only looks good on paper. They tell you what you get for your money and when you make a claim they answer right away and the contractor comes right away. The problem is the repair itself. First they have to decide if they can even help you, then they look for parts, then they say it can’t be fixed and offer a replacement you have to wait for months.

  • Submitted By Karen Lopez, Peoria, Choice Home Warranty

Choice has some plus sides and some downsides. Plus sides: they are quick and efficient. Their call center is excellent and they accept calls at any time, day or night. Downside: they don’t always repair the things they promised they would repair, using the contract agreement as an excuse.

  • Submitted By Kim Ying, Palatine, Total Protect

Total Protect is a pleasant surprise. I expected some insurance-type company that would only try to weasel their way out of their obligations, but they have actually been very fair. I don’t get the bad rep they sometimes get online. My personal experience with them has been very positive.
